Today, the Staff and pupils of Sliabh a’ Mhadra N.S. joined with the local community in a Mass celebrated by Fr. Brendan Walsh P.P. at the Cillín in Kilmore to remember all those buried there but in particular, Alfred F Wheelhouse whose body was washed ashore there following the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. Mr Wheelhouse, a marine engineer on the ship, was buried in an unmarked grave in the Cillín.
A plaque was unveiled on the wall of the burial ground to remind all who visit that he is laid to rest there. The sun shone for the beautiful ceremony as the pupils from Sliabh a’ Mhadra played their instruments and sang hymns with a sea theme. Thanks to all who attended and helped in the preparations.
