This week has been designated “Catholic Schools Week” by the Church. The Society of Missionary Children is the official children’s charity of the Catholic Church and here in Sliabh a’ Mhadra we have been supporting this charity for over forty years.
As a fund raiser for this charity and as part of our participation in Catholic Schools Week, we are running a picture Quiz for the pupils. It costs €1 to enter and pupils can enter as often as they wish. Prizes include a voucher for Smyths Toys, a calculator and other smaller prizes. The proceeds of the draw will go to the Society of Missionary Children and we hope that pupils will become more aware of those children who are less fortunate than themselves.
Society of Missionary Children – Children Helping Children
The Society of Missionary Children is the Churches official children’s charity and the oldest and largest in the world, with girls and boys actively participating in over 100 countries. It’s been present in Ireland since 1853 and was founded in 1843 by Charles de Forbin Janson in France.
‘Children Helping Children’ is our motto. We encourage children to pray for each other, especially for those living in fear and poverty. We also ask children to share whatever they can – no matter how little – to help girls and boys who have less. Each year children in Ireland help support thousands of projects in the developing world. These projects are run by missionaries who know the value of every cent they receive. All children are helped, regardless of their beliefs or faith.

Each year around 25,000 school children around Ireland take part in the Credit Union Schools Quiz. Now in its 28th year this iconic quiz tests brain power & allows for friendly competition at all stages. On Sunday next, Stage 1 takes place in Causeway Comprehensive School. We have four teams entered – two U11 and two U13 teams. We wish them the very best of luck and hope they have a great day.

3rd and 4th class students are learning how to sew with Trisha Riordan. The children have learned how to sew buttons, design a pattern, use a sewing machine and work with different fabrics! Even some of the teachers and SNAs are learning new skills! Watch out for the next sewing update to see what the children have made – you won’t be disappointed!

Congratulations to everyone on a very successful Christmas concert. We had a packed hall each night and it was a most entertaining show. A lot of hard work was put in by our staff and parents to ensure our children got to experience the enjoyment of performing on stage. Many thanks to all!
